No adjustments are planned in the construction process of the Belarusian NPP in connection with the COVID-19 epidemic.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy Zhanna Zenkevich commented to BelaPAN that «there are no changes. The plant is being built as per schedule. The only thing we cancelled was a press tour which had been planned for April.»
The NPP administration also confirmed that the coronavirus epidemic had not affected the progress of plant construction, all construction works are carried out as planned.
«We continue working in the normal way. The quarantine has been introduced neither in the country nor at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant, so everything progresses as scheduled,» said the interlocutor.
On April 6, the Belarusian Anti-Nuclear Campaign (BANC) which brings together a number of social, environmental and political structures and initiatives issued a statement with a call on the authorities to cancel the commissioning of the Belarusian NPP in 2020 in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant is being built near Ostrovets (Grodno region) out of proceeds of the Russian credit from the standard Russian VVER-1200 project.
According to the latest statements of officials, the commissioning of the first nuclear unit is scheduled for 2020, the second one — in 2021.
Based on the forecast of the Ministry of Energy, once the plant reaches its full capacity, it will generate more than 19 billion kWh of electric power annually.
